‘Stew’ Cooks-up a Hot Run at Brockville Speedway’s Northeast Fall Nationals

On a weekend when the mercury struggled to barely reach 10 degrees, its only fitting – and somewhat ironic – that a driver named Friesen (pronounced ‘freezin’) recorded a strong, 6th place effort at Brockville Speedway’s inaugural DIRTcar Fall Nationals.  After wrapping-up his regular commitments for the 2009 campaign, Stewart Friesen connected with Kendrick Racing to field a Global Warranty/LSJ Auto Parts Plus/Reichel Welding sponsored #6-Star Bicknell chassis in some of the late season Mr. DIRTcar championship trail events.  Brothers Todd and Darren Kendrick, along with their father Wayne are pleased with the results the young hot-shoe from Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario was able to accomplish.

“We ran Stewart in about 6 events and I think his worst finish was what we saw here today,” said Todd Kendrick after the Sunday, October 18th run at Brockville.  “I have a year-end meeting scheduled with the people from Global Warranty in the next few weeks.  We’ll be talking about plans for 2010 and looking at what Danny O’Brien was able to accomplish here – and what we did on a limited basis with Stewart could go a long way toward securing their backing for next year.  This is the first time they’ve been involved with a program like this and everything I’ve heard is very positive.”

In qualifying, Friesen turned a lap of 92.835 miles per hour to record the day’s 10th quickest lap.  From there, a second place finish to Pierre Dagenais in the afternoon’s 3rd qualifying heat solidly locked him into the 100 lapper where he took the green flag from the 4th starting spot. Sunday’s track conditions were considerably different from the day before.  A moist, tacky layout was replaced with a surface that became hard, dry and slick.  Traction was hard to find, but his experience on a variety of different surfaces allowed Friesen to get the most out of his machine.

“Running different places under varying conditions teaches you a lot about car control,” said Friesen.  Everyone had to deal with the same racetrack.  Saturday, there was plenty of grip – which we didn’t really expect, especially considering the sprint cars were also part of the show.  Paul (track promoter Paul Kirkland) did a great job.  Someone even said when he started to prep the surface for Saturday, the ground was frozen.  Sunday, the temperatures came up a few degrees and there was more wind.  That created an entirely different playground.”

Depending on sponsorship, Todd Kendrick says he’d like to have Friesen as part of his team’s stable in 2010.  He admits there is still plenty of homework left to be done, but he’s looking forward to the challenge.
